Changes to Video Relay

9 January 2019

There has been a change to the way NRS users can start a Video Relay call.

Please note that this change is a result of changes to the Skype platform and is outside the control of the NRS.

What you need to do to make a Video Relay call

  1. Open Skype as normal.
  2. You must upgrade to Skype version 8. If you haven’t already updated to Skype 8 see these instructions on how to check which version of Skype you are running and how to update to Skype 8.
  3. Search for the new NRS Video Relay contact in the Skype search bar. Click on the contact and type a message to add the contact to your ‘Contacts’ menu.
  4. Click on this new NRS Video Relay contact in your ‘Contacts’ menu. You will be taken to a chat screen.
  5. Type “!call”.
  6. If there is a relay officer available, this message containing a link will be sent to you:

“Click HERE within a minute to be connected to a relay officer.”

Click on the link to start the Video Relay call.

    7. If there are no relay officers available you will be sent this message:

“Currently all relay officers are busy. You have been placed in the call-back queue.  When a relay officer is ready we will send you a link to connect with them."

You can wait in the queue for a relay officer to call you back or you can try again later.

Once you are connected to a relay officer your call will continue as normal.
