Smoke alarms for people who are deaf or have a hearing impairment

If you can hear and there is a fire at home, a smoke alarm alerts you by making a loud noise. However when you are deaf or have a severe hearing impairment, a standard smoke alarm is not enough. You will need an alarm that makes visual and vibrating signals as well.

A number of Australian states provide access to low-cost smoke alarm systems for people who are deaf or have a significant hearing impairment.

The schemes differ in each state.

Western Australia and the Northern Territory currently do not have smoke alarm schemes for deaf people.
